Montreal editorial portrait of stylish female in front of window.jpg

Occasionally, life can be really, really good. During this time (hopefully as long as humanly possible), it's important to realize these good times for what they are, to be self aware, and to be thankful. It's also great to have a portrait of you that you're really proud, and hopefully, these portraits will capture a reflection of you now, in that moment, yet in the next breath also hint at where you're going next, taken somewhere in the middle of that 'can-do-no-wrong' time.

Meet my friend Zofia, she's a past client of mine, and also one of my favourite brides to date. Her Quebec vineyard wedding was a highlight of last summer, and I’ve know her and her sister (who did the excellent fashion styling for this shoot) for years. We recently got back in touch in order to document her Quebec vineyard wedding, and now again to create some editorial style portraits of her, looking fantastic, during a time that’s looking bright and gorgeous for her. A big thanks to our stylist Anne, and my assistant Marlow - for helping make this Montreal portrait shoot a great one.

Montreal Adventure Session - Why this rocks.

Creative Vancouver couple fly to Montreal for their Adventure Session in Mile End.

If you are reading this post chances are you're recently engaged, or in a serious relationship, which is an awesome 'life status' right? This is a really special time in your life, and it's a wonderful thing to have a few photographs of you and your partner that you're both really proud of, and that somehow capture 'you' and your personalities in an intimate and truly authentic way.

Nearly every couple I've ever worked with at some point before their adventure session or wedding talk about feeling anxious in front of the camera. I usually hear something like this “I’m not a model, I’m super awkward in photos, I get scared as hell in front of the camera, what am I supposed to do with my hands? I never look as good in pictures as I do in real life” etc etc.. we love all your natural looking portraits, there gorgeous, but we are freaked out about out session”

Does this ever happen to you? You are in the middle of something awesome, at a really cool event, or laughing out loud, feeling awesome, and then, a friend tries to capture that moment and the second you see a camera pointed in your direction the fun’s over and you immediately become self conscious? How do we get around that?

Easy… no problem, my answer is really simple, look at the image above this text, we start dancing in the middle of the street and all fears will be forgotten, instantly. Then, we get to work by having fun without thinking about photography, fear is a thing of the past, and really, it's a little adventure with a camera somewhere in the mix.

Many of my couples fly across the country to shoot their sessions, and before they do I ask them one question, through your photos, how do you want to remember this time in your life? This is what my Adventure Sessions are all about. Giving you the images you’ve always wanted, images you can finally be proud of, and love to call your own. I’ve created lots of ways to make my couples feel totally comfortable with me minutes after meeting me, and all the fun, intimate expressions and looks you see in my portraits are my clients authentic and true reaction to me, no awkward poses here :)

(side note) One thing I like to do to break the ice is give my camera to the couple very early on in the session, and ask them to take each others portrait, anywhere, anyway they wish, which comes as a total surprise to them, but again it's about having fun, feeling a little vulnerable, and loving it in that moment. Great things begin from that point, and it's not even about photography anymore.

If you are in a relationship, or engaged, and loving life right now take a second and think about this - through your photos, how do you want to remember this time in your life?

Contact me here and let me know all about it. I can't wait to hear from you.

Wakefield Adventure Session, Eric & Lindsay, Engaged.

I love to drive, and always look forward to a trip with a wide view. This session brought me back to Wakefield Quebec, for an adventure session with Lindsay and Jonathan.

Much like these two, most of my clients live in cities abroad and their adventure session is often the first chance to meet in person, which is another reason I so look forward to these sessions. In true adventure style, my couples normally aren’t aware of where I’ll bring them for their session, but it was really nice to meet and be invited into Lindsay and Jonathan’s home, surrounded by shade, woods, boulders, and the kind of country quiet you miss 5 minutes after hitting the road back home.

We took our time walking through the windy fields, with the sun high and behind us. Here are just a handful of images from their Wakefield Adventure Session.

Even better than beautiful.

I took this photo of Sarah about 10 minutes after meeting her for the first time. I was a complete stranger to her family yet in 10 minutes I had already jumped on top of her parents bed, taken solo portraits of her mom and dad, and them posed together (they were so sweet) which was their first official portrait in more than 10 years, then I talked my way into getting some wonderfully warm and genuine expressions from Sarah. The point of this is.... the way I make portraits is fun, comes as a surprise, and feels like it's over before you know it even started.

I know the crop on this photo could be better, but I'll take a real moment over a picture perfect staged expression anyday. I believe this is the single biggest issue I have with the majority of wedding photography today. Picture perfection. It's overrated, and no fun really. Do you want to be told where to stand, how to smile, and how high to jump, or would you have a better experience having the time of your life and fall in love all over again (while a camera is very casually yet carefully recording your most moving expressions throughout such a special occasion.)

There is an underlying feeling and humour, a spontaneous reaction mostly, throughout my portraits that most couples love and respond to when seeing my work for the first time. This is really just my personality reflected right back into the camera. I just love being there, at that moment, for them, and it shows.

The more of myself I allow in the room, and the more I put my personality out there, the more likely my photographs reflect my personality through you. This is a really fun way to work with couples, as it removes almost all of the pressure off of them, and brings out the very best in people after only a few minutes of meeting each other. The frame above is a very early shot from a Entrepôts Dominion Wedding I was invited to photograph. Sarah was just the sweetest, I know you are going to love seeing more images from her wedding including her handsome man Steve very soon.

I am a Montreal based Wedding Photographer that believes in the power of prints and portraiture. In my opinion, weddings are not about flowers or fancy things ~ weddings are about people, the ones you love most. As a photographer I'm most drawn to strong and simple portraits of nothing more than a great face captured in a way that is direct, classic, elegant, black and white, and framed within a strong square. These images will never, ever get old. Your wedding day image collection I always deliver will include many great portraits like this, and it's my passion to bring out the best in whomever I ask to sit for a portrait.

How can my friends and family get these photos? All the portraits and family portraits from your wedding can be easily ordered through my galleries site, and printed on some of the best archival papers in the world. I'm always more than excited for my clients to recieve their prints, and thrilled to package their portraits.

You just can’t fake a genuine smile, and these guys look pretty happy right :) Each of the portraits above happen 100% spontaneously, and took less than one minute to make from start to finish. The hardest thing about getting great expressions out of complete strangers is deciding on which joke to start the conversation with.

Another reason I make portraits of your family and guests in this way is because they are all part of your family, and family is the most important thing. I know it's your wedding day, and everyone is there to celebrate the new beginning and life you are starting together, and that is wonderful, but, if your wedding collection images were focused solely on just you and the love of your life ~ something huge would be missing. The visual expressions of their energy, excitement, joy, laughs, tears, every arm that embraced you that day, and every smile that made you smile, the bigger picture right? The people you love most in the world right? The people that helped make your celebration amazing right? I am there to help make your celebration as amazing as it should be too, so get ready for lot's of smiling faces in your mailbox soon, there are plenty more on the way.

ps. if you are engaged and planning your wedding click this link to get in touch, and tell me all about your story and wedding inspiration. How you want to remember your wedding day. ~

Montreal Wedding Photography - a photographer's field guide

Montreal wedding photographer

If we are meeting for the first time you should know that I am Micheal Beaulieu, a Montreal Montrealbased wedding and portrait photographerphotographer. I am always excited to hear from couples in the early stages of their wedding planning, looking for a photographer that gets them, understands them, and wants to help make their wedding day as amazing as it should be. I love to hear brides tell me that from their perspective there was no other photographer that even came close, and that moving forward with me as their photographer was an easy decision.

As photographers, we are responsible for creating the images our clients bring into their homes, but there are many other things we can do along the way to help make our couples wedding days truly amazing. I am really excited about the Found Focus Field Guide I am in the process of writing. This will be a guidebook for photographers looking for rewarding ways to create images that have more purpose, are more meaningful, and are a natural extension of one's most personal vision. A vision that happens to seamlessly echo exactly with what his/her couples are emotionally and visually drawn to.

This is a field guide that will encourage photographers to break the pattern of simply following trends in photography and begin to create woks only they could create. Clear-true-vision.

Photographers can sign up here to get on the newsletter which will keep everyone up to date with the release schedule. I promise this will be good.

In the wind off the water

Walking along the banks they stood still for a minute, and felt the cool wind off the water, and it was gorgeous. These are two frames from a recent Montreal engagement session, and I cannot wait to share more of this adventure. Later this summer I will once again collaborate with Elyna Kudish of Unity Weddings to photograph the Montreal wedding of Chryssi and Romain, I have a feeling very good things are on the way for everyone that day.

If you have a beautiful thing going and want to document your story, I want to hear from you. Get in touch with me here and let's plan your own adventure.
